T.S. Eliot wrote in Choruses from the Rock
Where is the Life we have lost in living?
Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge?
Where is the knowledge we have lost in information?
For project management it is clear that information about things is not enough, we must know (have knowledge about) what the information means, but Eliot points out that information (and here I am interpreting) can kill and bury whatever knowledge we have, and further that our wisdom can be lost in a sea of knowledge.
To me this is another stake in the heart of project management information systems which blindly gather data and spin it into project information, or more precisely, pile it up until it looks something like information. A web interface is a huge pipe for information, but knowledge and wisdom are not to be found at the other end of it. People at the wide end of the pipe don't have a box to fill in with knowledge, much less wisdom. Discussion is the key to understanding.
Why does judgement have such a bad name? Isn't that what managers are paid to supply?
