If you are taking the PMP certification, you need to know these, but you do NOT need to agonize over them. It's better that you understand the flow of a project, the knowledge areas, the processes and the matrix that these form.

Also, and most important - you need to frame your answers from the prespective "In a perfect PMBOK world I would..."

I disagree. There were several questions which covered earned value. Knowing thing like if a CPI greater than 1 is good or bad is important on the test. -Jack

I do agree that PMI and PMP are a worth while accreditation; however some employers do over require the PMP for job seekers in the USA. My issue is with the accreditation process and criteria. For example I have been a PM since 1998, however I took a non PM job for 3.5 years. I have all the PDU’s required and use PMBOK for reference etc etc… but since I do not have a bachelors degree then I need 5 years experience in the last 8 which I do not have, because of my PM break. So someone whom came from collage with a degree in cooking and has 3 years expertise qualifies… Were as I do not qualify with a combined 8.5 years experience… PMI need to look at the overall combined expertise, or stop persecuting individuals whom did not take the university route in to the job market.

I passed the exam last week. I feel the point of the exam is an understaning of the PMI version of Project Management and all the processes, tools and techniques therin. Few organizations will floow all the the processes exactly like Page 43 of the PMBOK, but at lease the standards are clear and provide a common reference point. The biggest problem I see within the organizations I've worked in is the lack of consistancy and lack of a standards to follow.

I agree, everyone seems to get very worked up about the PMP exam. A good chunk of the questions are just common sense for an experiences project manager. You do need to understand the philosophy behind the PMBOK, but learning it by heart is impossible. Much better to understand the overall structure then work from there.

I think I don't agree. Many of the questions are not common sense. I think they are designed to test your understanding of the definitions and process taxonomy laid out in the PMBOK. My thesis with this set of articles is that it is definitely possible to pass the PMP certification exam with just the PMBOK as your reference material. The exam I passed using just the PMBOK as study material serves as material evidence. -Jack

I have 28 years of direct management experience and 15 years of direct project management experience. I write project management curriculum for a major university and I've been a troubleshooter on problematic enterprise wide projects. I have also successfully launched new products. I have CONSIDERABLE project management experience, but was asked by a client to get my PMP, so I obliged. I never needed the credential before; however, it's helped me considerably since. I have managed project managers, some of which had the PMP and some of which did not. I never stressed it in the hiring process, but it was a "nice to have." Here's the reality - like it or not, in today's economy employers are routinely screening out those candidates without a PMP; it's not right, it's just the way it is. No amount of whining about it will change it. In my case, as a free agent, the PMP is even more critical because work is almost non-existent without the PMP. The PMP itself isn't worth a hill of beans, but if it's a requisite, then it's useful. Disparaging those with a PMP without knowing their backgrounds is wasted energy.

Congratulations!

I take issue with one of your statements: "Psychrometrically the test is supposed to determine if you are a real project management professional, ..." No. The check to see if you are a real PM professional is in the "Experience Verification" form. The test is to see ... as you so clearly state at the beginning of your entry ... "This experience validated my thesis that it is possible to pass the exam solely using the Guide to the PMBOK as your reference material." In other words, did you read and understand the PMBOK.

While you might have been surprised that many questions -- and easy ones at that -- related to Earned Value, the fact still remains: there's still a high percentage of failures on the exam. Perhaps you should recognize this for what it is: you are a -- clearly -- knowledgeable, experienced, very capable PM. As such, the surprise isn't that you found the exam easy, the surprise would have been if you had found the exam difficult.

Thanks. Was chatting with someone just this morning about how decisions are made. I'm trying to provide a service which helps decision-makers by providing them better tools for manging information for the decision basis (better project plans, better simulation of project plans impacted by risk different scenerios, etc.).

The reaction of my friend was that "in this industry we just make decisions based on instinct and gut feel. Some of us are lucky and others are not."

I'm going to read this book to see if it gives any insights I can use to refute/address this way of thinking. I'm not trying to take away their ability to make a decision based on instinct. I just feel that others around that person (or persons) would like to have a better basis.
